Brief summary: The talented Shin Yun-Bok aspires to be a painter but she harbors a great secret- she is a woman. A controversy concerning one of Shin Yun-Bok's paintings invites the master painter Kim Hong-Do back to the capital after he has lived in exile for quite some time. When the two of them meet, Kim Hong-Do takes Shin Yun-Bok under his wing, recognizing her talent and hoping to help her cultivate it. His purpose is to help Shin Yun-Bok rediscover her talent, until the King Jeong-Jo calls them both into his office for a special assignment. The two of them set to work to help the King claim authority over the court, but the King also has yet another purpose for their mission...

This drama is a fictional take on history concerning the Joseon painter Shin Yun-Bok, so many of the characters are based on popular figures. However, the plot is completely fictional. It shouldn't be taken seriously.

Moment of honesty: This drama was difficult to get through. There wasn't much to keep me interested in the plot, although the acting was great. Most of the story concerns Shin Yun-Bok's and Kim Hong-Do's mission under the King, and the big secret of her being a woman comes second to that. When it does come up, it typically concerns her slightly homosexual relationship with Jeong-Hyang. There's not much of a romance line to follow, even between her and Kim Hong-Do.

The drama still had a good idea behind it. As an artist and art teacher myself, I connected with a lot of concepts presented about art, what makes it, and even teaching techniques! I really enjoyed that part of the show and learned a few things. I feel so excited to grind some ink and get my hands on a brush!

The ending is probably my biggest issue with this show. We would think that Kim Hong-Do and Shin Yun-Bok would be ready for a happy ending with each other, but it's not to be. Shin Yun-Bok just leaves secretly and disappears on her own, leaving Kim Hong-Do with nothing but a portrait of herself. No one dies, things are left just a little bit incomplete.

My complaints about the plot aside, the acting really was great and so were the artistic concepts presented! It was a good historical drama for the sake of the experience. 2/5 stars!
