Lawless Lawyer 무법 변호사 Review

The 2018 Korean drama starring Lee Joon-Gi as Bong Sang-Pil, Seo Ye-Ji as Ha Jae-Yi, Lee Hye-Young as Cha Moon-Sook, and Choi Min-Soo as Ahn Oh-Joo.



Brief synopsis: Bong Sang-Pil has grown up using his fists before his mouth, but he becomes a lawyer and moves to gisung with a purpose. 18 years ago, his life was ruined by people who thought they were at the top of the world, but now he’s got the perfect plot of revenge to prove them wrong.



For all those Lee Joon-Gi fans who found themselves disappointed by “Criminal Minds,” here’s a drama that gives us everything we were looking for! “Lawless Lawyer” can be a little dorky sometimes, but I certainly felt satisfied with all the action scenes and a plot with a clear ambition.



I liked how Ha Jae-Yi and Bong Sang-Pil worked together, but their romantic relationship was a bit rushed. It could have used more time and development rather than what seemed like “Hey, I like you”-*kiss*-*bed*.



The court scenes were also enjoyable. By the final court scene in the finale, I realized that Bong Sang-Pil played the court like a poker game— You don’t play the game but rather you play your opponents instead. His move were calculated based on who he was playing for or against and watching it all come together was very satisfying!



But this drama had a lot of moral insight to it. For example, the line “Lies are completed by being laced with truth” by Ahn Oh-Joo in episode 11. The most dangerous kind of lie there is happens to be the kind that we, despite our intelligence level or experience, cannot discern from the truth. These lies manage to confuse us so much only because they are mixed with pieces of truth. Or they are a bent and distorted truth. A lot of this drama is about debunking a huge lie and magnifying the truth, just as if the truth were a twisted piece of metal and our protagonists were the blacksmiths ready to straighten it out.



Cha Moon-Sook’s situation is also a bit interesting. She could have stayed a terrible person for her entire lifetime (I think we all know someone like that, so it IS possible), but then she committed one, killed one person and it wasn’t even premeditated, but then spent her entire life hiding it. She covered it up with people and with more crime. How much easier and how much more relaxing would it have been to come clean from the beginning?



The best part of the finale was watching how Bong Sang-Pil shifted from speaking in court as Mrs. Nam’s defense to prosecuting Cha Moon-Sook as she sat there as the judge. It seemed so seamless and yet so quick.



In conclusion, “Lawless Lawyer” was very enjoyable and I’d gladly watch it again! 5/5 stars!
