Spellbound 오싼한 연애 Review

The 2011 Korean film starring Lee Min-Ki as Ma Jo-Goo and Son Ye-Jin as Kang Yeo-Ri. Also known as “Chilling Romance” or “My Girlfriend Can See Ghosts.”



Brief synopsis: A street magician Ma Jo-Goo meets Yeo-Ri, who looks like she harbors some big secret, and he asks her to partner with him in order to make more business. But Jo-Goo doesn’t realize that this girl really is haunted and that staying by her side is going to take a lot of effort and courage.



This is a spooky little romantic comedy that managed to make me laugh and cover my ears in fright in the same two hours!



So many parts of this movie were just too cute! Like the five kinds of kisses, her steps of how to overcome fear, and dancing in the creepy basement.



I loved Lee Min-Ki in this movie. His characters says he only wears tailor-made shirts, but those shirts sure rip easily! I’m glad he learned to carry around spares when he went out drinking with her! But a little question: how did he come to see the ghosts too anyways? Or could they always be seen by others but were just ignored like shadows in the corner of the eye?



Favorite line: “Remember what I said about horror heroines never being able to fall in love? They have to be lonely for their screams to be desperate,”— Ma Jo-Goo. At first I thought this line sounded a little threatening and sad, but then I thought it was sweet. In this moment he is thinking about Yeo-Ri who has decided that she’s better off alone rather than getting him hurt again, but he’s just so worried about how she’s going to fare on her own like that. He can’t help but picture her as one of those horror movie heroines that the thought of her screaming like that, with no one to hear her, has him heartbroken. Sure, he could also be worried about her safety, or if she’ll meet another guy in Norway, but no. He’s just thinking about her feelings of fear that she’ll have to take care of on her own. Jo-Goo knows her so well already like that, and that’s the part I think is sweet. I hope we can each all find a special someone that knows us well enough like that.



Watching was really fun! I was surprised how creepy some parts could be but how cute characters were. Highly recommend, especially around Halloween. 5/5 stars!
