Witch’s Romance 마녀의 연애 Review

⭐️⭐️⭐️

The 2014 Korean drama starring Uhm Jung-Hwa as Jan Ji-Yeon and Park Seo-Joon as Yoon Dong-Ha. Also known as “A Witch’s Love.”

Brief summary: According to everyone who has worked with her, Ban Ji-Yeon is a witch. She’s temperamental and mean but when the young Dong-Ha meets her, he’s determined to get under her skin. But once he gets into her heart, he’s going to realize that this “witch” is just like everybody else and wants the same thing as everybody else: to love and be loved.

The drama was a little difficult to stay committed to. It felt like the writers couldn’t make up their minds between the romantic comedy theme and the crime/thriller theme while trying to pull off a noona romance at the same time.

I started watching it for Park Seo-Joon, who is always talented no matter what he’s in, but thought that this role was a little beneath his talent range. Dong-Ha was a good character, but he didn’t feel dynamic enough.

And a quick note: the eye-contact-influencing-attraction thing is legitimate. Eye contact can encourage feelings of mutual attraction. Maybe it’s worth a try with your next crush!

Ban Ji-Yeon’s character was mildly confusing. She’s older, experienced in her job, but she’s quite naive and immature. Perhaps this was the point to make the noona romance thing work; she’s older on the outside but young on the inside. Therefore we’d feel better about her relationship with Dong-Ha (note: I don’t have anything against noona romances or romantic stories that sport large age gaps, but the bigger the age gap the more I wonder if one of them is being taken advantage of or missing out on something else). It may have just been that occasionally the immature qualities of her character overwhelmed whatever else was going on in the drama.

In conclusion, this drama was okay but I don’t know that I would watch it again. 3/5 stars.
