My Only Love Song 마이 온리 러브송 Review

The 2017 American-Korean web drama starring Lee Jong-Hyun as On-Dal, Gong Seung-Yeon as Su-Jeong/Nan-Yeon, Kim Yeon-Seo as Princess Pyeong-Gang, Ahn Bo-Hyun as Moo-Myung, Lee Jae-Jin as Byun Sam-Yong, and Park Joo-Hyung as Ko Il-Yong.



Brief summary: After a dispute with her drama production staff that could cost her reputation and career, the Korean actress Su-Jeong hops in an old van and sets her course for anywhere to take her away. But the van seems to have a mind of its own when it throws her into the ancient kingdom of Goguryeo and Su-Jeong’s acting ability is put to the test! And just when the situation looks like it couldn’t get worse, her path disadvantageously crosses with the popular fraud who calls himself On-Dal.



This web series is one of the best I’ve seen and yet one of the most confusing I’ve seen! We’re looking at Herby meets time travel meets historical kdrama and if that wasn’t enough, through all 20 half-hour episodes you’re wondering if this is supposed to be a parody, a spoof, or just plain melodramatic. I can’t remember the exact moment I decided this, but the perfect term to describe this web drama has got to be “dope;” it seems like it was written and edited under the influence but I also mean it as slang for “awesome,” or “the bomb.”



I was all the more amazed that such a spoof-like web drama could give me the feels! Some of the romance is so sappy that you could make maple syrup out of it, but that was some good syrup! My heart rose and fell in the emotional roller coaster of the story and characters and I have to give props to any web series that can manage such a feat.



This web drama is rated TV-MA on Netflix for a reason. The language can be pretty colorful and there’s the occasional small [insert male anatomy] joke here and there. But that said, this is still one of the better Asian web series I’ve seen Netflix produce.



Although this drama was gripping and I was sucked into it so quickly, it definitely had its flaws. While I’m certainly reserving a special place in my heart for this drama (as in, I would totally watch it again), 4/5 stars is appropriate. Highly recommend it for watching with your gal friends and buddies!
