Flower Boy Ramyun Shop 꽃미남 라면가게
★★★★
The 2011 Korean drama, starring Lee Chung-Ah as Yang Eun-Bi, Jung Il-Woo as Cha Chi-Soo, Lee Ki-Woo as Choi Kang-Hyuk, Park Min-Woo as Kim Ba-Wool, and Jo Yoon-Woo as Woo Hyun-Woo.
This drama kept me interested. The rivalry and relationship between Cha Chi-Soo and Choi Kang-Hyuk was pretty dominant. It didn't help that Yang Eun-Bi's character wasn't very strong (although very understandable and realistic). Which is funny, because Eun-Bi's appeal is in her physical strength.
The plot was decent. It was fairly organized. There were a couple of moments where the mood change was too abrupt. There are actually many instances of that, but because this drama was meant to be a romantic comedy, most of them are forgivable.
I have mixed feelings about all of the bowel movement and ramyun references. I realize most of the talk about poop was there for comedic relief, but I think it was almost excessive. Wasn't there any other way? It kinda killed the mood sometimes...
I was impressed with the secondary characters, Kim Ba-Wool, Woo Hyun-Woo, Yoon So-Yi, Kang Dong-Joo, and Coach Seo. They were well constructed, without holes. I liked that, They added a good support system that the drama probably couldn't have done well without.
My real issues with the drama came from Kang-Hyuk's strong character versus Cha Chi-Soo, whose character was comparatively weak and lacking (a character age of 19 didn't help anything). In other words, I didn't fall in love with Cha Chi-Soo and was pretty disappointed that he got the girl in the end. The term the drama-obsessed use to describe falling hard for the second male lead is "Second Leading Male Syndrome." While watching this drama, I got it pretty bad. From what I saw, Kang-Hyuk could have been created from the results of a Perfect-Man survey with a desperate female demographic. It's believable, because Kang-Hyuk was the absolutely perfect man! He may have been the second love interest, but he was also the moral backbone of the story after Eun-Bi's father died. In comparison, Cha Chi-Soo just seemed pathetic no matter how hard he tried.
All in all, this drama was pretty alright. It didn't have the elements to be a favorite, but I still enjoyed watching it!
