Goong 궁/ Princess Hours Review

★★★★

The 2006 Korean drama, starring starring Yoon Eun-hye as Shin Chae-kyung Ju Ji-hoon as Lee ShinKim Jeong-hoon as Lee Yool, and Song Ji-hyo as Min Hyo-rin.

This one was different from what I expected. I expected a Princess Diaries theme, but that only lasted the first 6 episodes or so. I didn't expect the character Shin Chae-kyung and Lee Shin to get hitched so quickly! Unlike most dramas, the majority of the story started out with the lead characters already together. Where we tend to expect the couple to go through their story and troubles before marriage or their happy ending, their story was about being rather unsatisfied with their predicament immediately after their arranged marriage.

I loved Shin and Chae-kyung's characters. They were well-developed and the two definitely had chemistry throughout the series.

I did think that Lee Yool could have been better. He was believable, but I had been hoping that he would stay within the cookie-cutter second leading male that we all know and love (yes, the kind that breaks our hearts when they wallow in lonesomeness) so that we could love him and still be somewhat okay with the designed OTP. Instead, I found myself losing favor of him the more he persisted for Chae-kyung. I believed he deserved it when Shin punched him in the face! I didn't feel as sorry for him when Chae-kyung still chose Shin after Yool tried so hard to pull her away  from him.

As for Min Hyo-rin, I just wish she had a bigger role than as Shin's despondent ex. Her character could have pulled off much more. I didn't get attached to her although she had the potential to pull our hearts her way.

Plot- The plot could have been a little more exciting, but that's coming from a critic with a fancy for action scenes. The story was true to itself- the two main leads falling in love despite being rushed into an  arranged marriage. It was a roller coaster just waiting for the two of them to finally reconcile!

This drama really made me smile and laugh. If "cute" is a priority element for you, "Goong" will definitely not leave you disappointed!
