★★★★

The 2010 Korean drama also known as "Mary Stayed Out All Night," starring Moon Geun-Young as Wi Mae-Ri, Jang Geun-Suk as Kang Moo-Kyul, and Kim Jae-Wook as Jung In.

This one is cute. Definitely a chick-flick. The story is all about the development of a love triangle. Of course, this means that it's not really a happy ending for some characters, but we as the audience are all too occupied shipping the main love interests to feel much sympathy. I realize that there are those love triangles that leave us crying because we really did fall in love with the second leads, but it was not the case for this show.

And the main culprit to blame for it this time, I think, was Jang Geun-Suk. This had to be one of his best characters in his career. He made Kang Moo-Kyul easy to fall in love with and that kept the drama going strong, in my opinion. Kang Moo-Kyul's character alone was really cute, but Jang Geun-Suk helped him come alive.

The only part of Kang Moo-Kyul's character that could slightly annoy me was his purely incredible (and consistent!) habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and totally misreading the situation. I don't think I could count the number of times this happened with my fingers. I could blame the writers for it, but its purpose was to stretch the plot. After all, what is a romantic comedy drama without an emotional roller-coaster?

The last drama I saw Kim Jae-Wook in was "Coffee Prince." He played a Japanese character that spoke Korean. in "Marry Me, Mary" he played a Korean character that spoke Japanese. I found it a little amusing. To set it straight, he really IS Korean, and speaks fluent Japanese. Jung In's character was believable and well-formed, although he was no competition for Kang Moo-Kyul. All the same, watching his part in the drama was still enjoyable.

One of the things that interested me the most about this drama was the OST (or, official soundtrack). Much of the music for this show was source music, that is- the source of the music is represented somewhere on-screen. You can still see the concept for source music used in contemporary film, but may only recognize it once or twice in a movie. I guess because music and the band was a big part of Kang Moo-Kyul and Wi Mae-Ri's relationship, there was excuse to use the concept more repeatedly. This wasn't all my fascination about the OST, though. There was a diversity of moods relative to each motif that had power to shape the mood of the scene. And thankfully that power was not misused.

About Wi Mae-Ri- It'd probably be more valuable to your experience with this drama to do what I did not do, and that is be patient with Wi Mae-Ri's character. I misjudged her to be a complete idiot in the beginning. She's actually pretty smart. She even got Kang Moo-Kyul to give her an "autograph," which she used to draw up a state-of-well-being contract after accidentally hitting him with her car (which, by the way, is illegal  and should NOT be tried at home). I think the dominant trait for her character was cuteness, in both appearance and behavior. Perhaps it's why we felt such a shock when she got a separate wardrobe from Jung In's father.

This drama is really good if you're looking for sweet romantic comedy with its fair share of heart-swoons. Where else will you see Jang Geun-Suk turn a leaf vegetable into a bouquet? It's fresh air from the classic theme of attractive chaebols and strong Cinderellas, implementing the flavor of Romeo and Juliet without the bitter ending. I found "Marry Me, Mary" to be an enjoyable drama, without much to complain about. I'd recommend it to anyone ready to fall in love with another male lead  and a sweet story!
