★★★★★

The 2014 Korean drama, starring Choi Jin-Hyuk as Oh Chang-Min, Song Ji-Hyo as Oh Jin-Hee, Lee Pil-Mo as Guk Cheon-Su, and Choi Yeo-Jin as Shim Ji-Hye.

A brief synopsis: Once upon a time (actually, just six years before the main plot takes place) Oh Chang-Min and Oh Jin-Hee fell in love and got married despite their family difficulties, but within a year they divorced and parted ways determined not to get involved with each other ever again. Their resolve is put to the challenge when they become interns at the same hospital, and even the same emergency room! What can you do about an ex that you see every day at work?

Just about everything in this drama was perfect. Choi Jin-Hyuk was perfect. Everyone else was perfect. The characters were strong and rooted. The plot was organized. There was an even ratio between the excitement and the feels. There was nothing I would really change!

All of the characters were stable. They didn't surprise and do something completely out of their role. This helped the stability of the whole drama. Even the secondary characters, such as the family members or the other interns, did not disappoint. They each fulfilled their roles and each had their own character development, meaning that although we grow to love these characters anyways, they had some growing on their own during the drama, too. I loved that they had that individuality about them, more than characters only meant to push the main leads along.

The main leads were impressive. There was a lot of development from Oh Jin-Hee, Oh Chang-Min, and Guk Cheon-Su. I loved each more at end than I did at the beginning. I think part of what made watching the drama difficult sometimes was that I kept comparing Chief Guk and Oh Chang-Min because they became part of a love triangle. It wasn't easy to pick a ship to sail so I thought to cheer them on equally. That wasn't easy either.

I was surprised, and yet not totally surprised, to find Park Joon-Geum playing Oh Chang-Min's mother. I've noticed Park Joon-Geum playing various maternal roles in  my drama experience and was glad to see her again in "Emergency Couple." And then the realization only hit me after the fifth episode or so. She's played a maternal role with Choi Jin-Hyuk before, in the hit drama "Heirs." It brought back a lot of memories from that drama. During a scene featuring Oh Chang-Min's mother at a salon, she mentions that maybe she should just leave her husband and find a new guy. She says "Lee Min-Ho, Kim Woo-Bin, those guys are still available.." I couldn't help but laugh a little (Lee Min-Ho and Kim Woo-Bin were the two primary male leads in "Heirs," in which Lee Min-Ho and Choi Jin-Hyuk also played brothers)! The cameo was well played, but it would take someone who's already seen "Heirs" to recognize the irony.

"Emergency Couple" also has to be one of the better medical dramas out there. Some medical dramas tend to lose focus on the medical occupation and instead emphasize the relationship drama occurring elsewhere. "Emergency Couple" kept a neat balance on both. Both the medical scenes and the drama scenes kept me interested. Both aspects of the plot made me feel both excited and emotional!

There was still a lot of philosophical value in the drama, although the plot was mostly about the main leads' relationship and the medical needs of the emergency room. One of the questions it poses: would you rather do something you love and live for only a month, or would you give it up and live for a long, long time? Each of the leads is asked this question, and each respond differently. It draws you to think about how you would answer the question- which would you choose? Aside from this, there are concepts the drama puts to the challenge, such as dealing with difficult family members, where your relationships fall on your list of priorities, how to fix your own mistakes, and other medical questions. The dramas that pose questions or concepts such as these are the ones most worth watching.

I had to give this one five stars. It was perfect! My heart moved with it every step of the way. I would watch it again  and again and recommend it to all!
