The
2012 MBC Korean drama, starring Kim Soo-Hyun as King Lee-Hwon, Han Ga-In as Heo
Yeon-Woo/Wol, and Jung Il-Woo as Prince Yang-Myung.
Brief
summary: Eight years previous, Crown Prince Lee-Hwon and Yeon-Woo met by
chance, fell in love, and Yeon-Woo became Crown Princess Elect. But ill
intentions turning to black magic caused tragedy that tore the two apart in the
name of Fate. After the eight years, they meet again in the Palace after
Lee-Hwon has become King and Yeon-Woo has become a shaman, but because of
Yeon-Woo’s amnesia they don’t recognize each other. The two of them start to
repeat history and Yeon-Woo’s uncanny resemblance to his lost love causes
Lee-Hwon to investigate what really happened back then.
It was really easy to get attached to this drama. A little bit of an
emotional rollercoaster. Perhaps it was that the characters’ misery was
portrayed so well that I started feeling it too and that led to feeling
ecstatic over every little sliver of hope. The story was very well organized.
It is considered a historical drama because of the Joseon setting, although
there is no real history behind it. I still loved it! There was nothing left to
be confused about because everything came full circle almost perfectly. I liked
that about this ending- it was airtight!
I
loved the characters. Lee-Hwon and Yang-Myung were both so feisty although
their roles were so different! I became so involved that my deepest wish was
for their characters to reconcile and then they could both get their happy
endings. Needless to say, the final episode which determined that was very
heated in my experience.
Heo
Yeon-Woo didn’t impress me as much as she could have, but everything about her
was fitting for her role. I wish we could have seen some of the humor in her
that we got to see in the King and Prince, but her role was classified to “perfect
Queen material” and that was what we saw. She was supposed to emanate
principles of selflessness, intelligence, and grace. She did her job, but I
couldn’t find her very relatable.
All
of the secondary characters were well-rounded although they didn’t have much
background to them. I’ll admit I’m biased; Hyung-Sun was totally my favorite! He
gave special meanings to building snowmen before Frozen was even a thing!
Kim
Soo-Hyun’s acting was truly amazing! He convinced me that he could summon tears
at will! He was my favorite part of “Moon Embracing the Sun” and made the drama
come alive! The reason why his face from this drama is used so frequently for
memes is because the emotion is portrayed so accurately!
I
loved this drama! I experienced all the feels with this one! Good acting and a
cool story make for a fantastic drama experience!
