Moonlight Drawn by Clouds 구르미 그린 달빛 / Love in the Moonlight
★★★★★
The 2016 Korean drama, also known as "Love in the Moonlight," starring Park Bo-Gum as Yi/Lee Yeong, Kim Yoo-Jung as Hong Ra-On, Jinyoung as Kim Yoon-Sung, and Kwak Dong-Yeon as Kim Byung-Yeon.
Brief synopsis: The Crown Prince lives a pretty care-free life despite how he should be behaving as the Crown Prince. He finds real opportunity to get out of the palace when he intercepts love letters being sent to his sister. Outside of the palace, he meets a playful young man who tricks him into a ditch. This playful young man happens to be a playful young woman disguised as a man commonly called Hong Sam-Nom, and she leaves him there, believing that they'll never cross paths again. But when loan sharks sell her into the palace as a eunuch, she runs into the man she left in a ditch, and he seems determined to make her life miserable.
I loved this one! I loved the Joseon setting (Joseon's always fun. It's like there are no rules when it comes to Joseon) and the story is very cute. Anyone who's seen the drama will agree that Park Bo-Gum pulled their heartstrings and made them fall in love!
The first half of the drama is very much a romantic comedy. The relationship between Yeong and Ra-On is hilarious! It takes Ra-On quite a while to realize that the guy she knows in the palace as a friend is none other than the Crown Prince that she's been making fun of, and Yeong just enjoys the time that she doesn't know to the fullest.
Yoon-Sung didn't come off strong as the second-leading male, so he didn't present much of a challenge to Yeong. He was doting to Ra-On, but he didn't stand a chance. The other leading male that we all fall in love with , however, is Byung-Yeon! He's strong, dark, tall, handsome, and full of secrets. Byung-Yeon seems to play a larger part in the drama because of the great inner struggle he represents. Throughout the drama and up into the second-to-last episode, Byung-Yeon is torn between serving the rebellion that he supports and serving the Crown Prince, his best friend in the world. His struggle pulls on our heartstrings almost as much as Park Bo-Gum does!
There were a couple of twists in the drama that I didn't think were absolutely necessary. The story would have been fine and the audience probably would have been happier if they weren't there, but what is a K-drama if it does not give your emotions whiplash?
"Moonlight Drawn by Clouds" is a must-see! The story is cute and moving and the acting is fantastic! We're looking forward to see what Park Bo-Gum comes out with next!
