The 2016 South Korean KBS drama, starring Jang Hyuk as Lee Young-Oh, and Park So-Dam as Gye Jin-Sung.
Brief summary: Doctor Lee Young-Oh is a brilliant neurosurgeon, but due to a childhood accident lacks the ability to feel emotions or empathize with other people. During exciting events at Hyun Sung hosptial, he meets the lively police officer Gye Jin-Sung and the two of them start working together to unravel the mysterious secret that Hyun Sung is hiding. Lee Young-Oh takes pride in his skill and that his disability helps promote those surgical skills, but the more time he spends with Jin-Sung the more small differences he starts noticing in himself..
This medical drama totally moved my heart! The story is exciting and the production was just awesome. I was impressed throughout. Jang Hyuk and Park So-Dam are just amazing.
One of the ethical questions posed during the drama was "does the end justify the means?" Dr. Lee Young-Oh will do dangerous surgeries because he believes that saving the patient's life is the priority over the means. However, when he learns about Hyun Sung's secret research and testing, he opposes it because although it could potentially produce good results, the side affects are too dangerous. Throughout the drama Dr. Lee seems to experience a moral progression and Jin-Sung is a catalyst for it.
I had a bit of interest and questions pertaining to Dr. Hyeon Suk-Joo. In the beginning he appears to be the popular good guy that wouldn't stand to see an injustice done. But after he loses a fellow nurse and her daughter as patients, his character seems to take a darker turn. I couldn't tell if it was a turn taken out of grief or personal gain, or even for genuine research. By the end of the drama we view him as the good doctor that just wants to save the next patient, but I don't think his development for that time in the middle was strong enough for a main character. He looked more secondary during it although his role should be stronger.
During this drama, I also learned what the Eagle Riders were! There are five professors in Hyun Sung hospital that seem to have nothing better to do than eat their food and gossip. They are consistently looking for their next bit of entertainment. References to them as the Eagle Riders came up a few times because there are five of them that stick together, but until the last two episodes they just seem lazy. I'm glad Lee Young-Oh gave them a chance to use their slothful skills for good!
There's lots to love about this drama- the relationship development, the ethics, the medical stuff, the mysterious plot, and even the quirky characters! I, personally, loved it all! I found myself feeling sad that there were only 14 episodes (usually k-dramas have either 16 or 20). This drama will teach you some about medical terms and procedures and will give your heart a roller coaster ride as you become attached!
