★★★★

The 2013 Korean drama, starring Park Shin-Hye as Go Dok-Mi, Yoon Shi-Yoon as Enrique Geum, and Kim Ji-Hoon as Oh Jin-Rak.

Brief summary: Go Dok-Mi has been something of a hermit for a long time, but she finds interest in two things she can enjoy from her apartment: TV travel shows and documentaries, and the really good-looking guy, Han Tae-Joon, across the street she can peek at through her window. Things start to change for Go Dok-Mi when Han Tae-Joon's cousin Enrique comes to Korea and catches her peeping through the window! As Enrique learns more about Go Dok-Mi and how she lives, he becomes committed to getting her out of the apartment and into the real world. But he finds out that Go Dok-Mi can be a little resistant to change and that her neighbor Oh Jin-Rak doesn't like him either! This drama is about neighbors and friends figuring out what is most important to them and what it means to really live life.

This drama really is cute but I didn't think the plot was exciting enough for five stars. I still wouldn't mind seeing it again, though. Most of the plot is centered around Enrique's quest to help Go Dok-Mi and the push and pull that it comes with. The writers added a few things to keep it interesting throughout all sixteen episodes, such as the love triangle with Oh Jin-Rak, Cha Do-Hwi and Dok-Mi's past, and even the growing relationship between Dong-Hoon and the editor! Throughout the entire drama, however, I got the most enjoyment out of watching Enrique. His character is a almost a perfect one, a break from the common trend of kdrama male protagonists with rough attitudes. Most of the drama's humor comes from Enrique and his childish personality.

I found the progression between Oh Dong-Hoon and the webtoon editor Kim Seul-Gi the second most entertaining. Both characters are a lot more realistic than the rest. They're normal and do normal things. The two characters both bring the idea of hard work into the drama. None of the other characters really work as much, but Dong-Hoon and Kim Seul-Gi introduce the idea that more often than not hard work is required to achieve a dream, and it's not going to be a short amount of time either. I felt a personal connection with them because I understand that. However, they also show that life is to be lived while you're working on that dream. You don't put off living and enjoying your days until you've already achieved your goal! We may know people who are on different sides of the extreme, either working themselves to a potentially early grave without regard for anything else or any other priorities, or living doing as few things of value as possible and forgetting how to sustain themselves. However, I think we may all agree that the happiest people we know are the ones who manage a balance between the duties of life and fun.

Cha Do-Hwi was a little unnecessary in my opinion. A girl doesn't need a tragic backstory to become a recluse. I know I don't need that many reasons! Unfortunately, she proved to be the second-leading female that no one really likes although the actress is truly talented. I think her character could have had potential, but was neglected.

The OST for this drama is pretty unique, featuring music by both Park Shin-Hye and Yoon Shi-Yoon (who could both make great musicians for a living), J-Rabbit, and Lee Jung. The music definitely set the mood for the drama, so it's worth congratulating!

It's a different concept for a Korean drama, frequently drawing parallels to the fairy tale of Rapunzel but also being a type of "slice-of-life" story. An enjoyable watch and definitely one to make you smile!
