The 2009 Korean drama, starring Gu Hye-Sun as Geum Jan-Di, Lee Min-Ho as Gu Joon-Pyo, Kim Hyun-Joong as Yoon Ji-Hoo, Kim Bum as So Yi-Jung, and Kim Joon as Song Woo-Bin.
Brief summary: Geum Jan-Di is a girl from the poorer side of the economy who just likes to swim, but when she saves the life of a student at ShinWa Academy, Jan-Di is suddenly offered a full-ride scholarship to attend. However, the justice-driven Jan-Di immediately finds herself at odds with the most popular group of boys called F4, led by the bully Gu Joon-Pyo. The biggest problem, though, is that the more Jan-Di and Joon-Pyo fight, the more Joon-Pyo likes her! Will Jan-Di eventually like him in return? Does Joon-Pyo’s best friend Ji-Hoo have a chance? What might the formidable President Kang do about the girl her son is apparently crushing on?
If we really examine it and compare it to other successful cinematography, “Boys Over Flowers” really shouldn’t stand a chance. It’s a little confusing as to why it is was so successful and still draws in fans. The picture is so-so and the plot and characters are jumpy and somewhat inconsistent. Let’s be real and honest- the drama has many flaws.
Then why is it still so popular?
“Boys Over Flowers,” although adapted from the Japanese manga, was kind of a leap for melodrama acting. The objective was to keep viewers entertained, but it proved to be a prime opportunity for many of the actors and actresses to gain popularity.
The drama is best known for Lee Min-Ho’s participation as the main lead. If anyone gained the most fame from “Boys Over Flowers,” it’d be him. It is still rumored that Lee Min-Ho himself hated Gu Joon-Pyo’s iconic curly hair. His participation as the lead is probably the main reason many k-drama addicts may encourage “Boys Over Flowers” for first-time viewers- How better to introduce someone to the vast world of Korean media than by bringing them straight to the epitome?
The OST features quite a variety, including songs from Kim Hyun-Joong and T-MAX.
Another element that keeps the drama popular is the vicious love triangle between Gu Joon-Pyo, Geum Jan-Di, and Yoon Ji-Hoo. In my personal case, it kept my heart pounding after every episode!
Opinions on “Boys Over Flowers” vary. Some regard it as great, some regard it as very little. Really, the only way to get your own opinion is to watch it yourself. So good luck!
