Revolutionary Love 변혁의 사랑 Review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The 2017 Korean drama starring Choi Si-Won as Byun Hyuk, Kang So-Ra as Baek Joon, and Gong Myung as Kwon Jae-Hoon.

Brief summary: Baek Joon is a hard-working part-timer, Jae-Hoon is a quiet full-time employee, and Byun Hyuk is an ignorant, unemployed, third-generation chaebol. When some accidents bring all three of them together, things get explosive!

I was so worried that expectations would not be met with this one. I was scared that I wouldn’t have fun with it, scared that it wouldn’t be as good as I hoped.

Boy, was I wrong!

The beginning played out your typical romantic comedy, but the drama gradually became more than that. It became more than just watching the dumb rich guy chase after the rad pretty girl. Corporate honesty became the emphasis- it was surprisingly moral! Byun Hyuk seems to be the motivating force behind it with his heart of gold and desire to change himself. As he tries to change himself into someone fit for Baek Joon, he learns about a whole host of problems around him that he had never considered to be problems before, and realizes that more needs to change than just himself. He has to weigh what he knows- his family’s company is very successful because of a lot of hard work, but some of that hard work was dirtier than he thought. Here is where we ask the question: when do the ends justify the means? What exactly is worth sacrificing for the best results? A lot of characters, including Kwon Choon-Sub, Kwon Jae-Hoon, Byun Hyuk, and Byun Woo-Sung all dance around the answer differently. Sometimes the reality of that answer is different than what was idealized.

The characters all seem to change from how they were in the beginning as well. Turns out, the dumb guy wasn’t as dumb as you thought he was, the corporate employee wasn’t as stiff as you thought he was, the rad part-timer wasn’t as guarded as you thought she was, the model child wasn’t as righteous as you thought he was, and the policeman wasn’t as robotic as you thought he was. Maybe this is why is gets more fun to watch the further you progress in the storyline.

There’s a lot of feel-good in this drama. There’s also just a little bit of pain in those feels. When the characters feel hurt, sad, or angered, you can’t help but feel a bit of sympathy.

I liked the OST for this one. It was very simple, but I thought the music was catching and effective. My favorite part would have to be “Sing My Song” by Gu Keun-Byul!

“Revolutionary Love” was definitely a celebratory drama for Choi Si-Won, as it was his first acting project since his military discharge. It definitely won support from his fans, and the singing scene with the protest at the GangSu Foods event was probably written just for him :)

This drama also has one of the cutest endings I’ve ever seen- feels a little bit like an American romantic comedy ending, but it breaks the cliche you think it’s heading towards. Loved it!

In my simplest words possible to summarize, “Revolutionary Love” was cute!
