The 2017-18 Korean drama starring Yoo Seung-Ho as Kim Min-Kyu and Chae So-Bin as Jo Ji-Ah/Aiji 3.
Brief summary: Kim Min-Kyu lives alone with a rare and remarkable illness— he is allergic to humans. Physical contact with any person will lead to a severe allergic reaction and possibly anaphylactic shock. So he is extremely careful, but because of his solitary lifestyle he is more than rough around the edges. Kim Min-Kyu is scouted by an engineering team called Santa Maria about investing in a human-like robot, Aiji 3. But on the day of delivery, the robot is accidentally broken and the team gets an emergency replacement: the robot’s face model Jo Ji-Ah. Kim Min-Kyu and Jo Ji-Ah are forced into close quarters, but how long can Ji-Ah keep up the charade?
One word: brilliant. When I first heard of the idea for this drama, I was worried. Allergies to human intermingled with robots? It sounded too far-fetched to work as a rom-com. The only thing that could come to mind was VIXX’s “Error” MV and the American film I-Robot. But this drama blew my mind!
It’s funny. Hilarious, and I mean it. The key point of the comedy seemed to be magnifying awkward situations, which I enjoyed because awkward situations are 85% of my daily life. The effect was almost relaxing!
I’ve seen Yoo Seung-Ho in a few other dramas, and this was his first romantic-comedy lead role. He’s been a Great Jade Emperor, a murderous psychopath, and a prince of Joseon, but this was probably the role I’ve seen him smile the most in. I think I’ll continue to be a fan!
This drama does make me think about a couple things.. 1) What exactly is the limit for artificial intelligence? What can it do and what can’t it? And 2) how is trust developed? Does it develop in stages or are there even different types of trust, like love?
I’m probably going to keep this one as a personal favorite :) 5/5 stars!
