My Girl 마이걸 Review

The 2005-2006 Korean drama starring Lee Da-Hae as Joo Yoo-Rain, Lee Dong-Wook as Seol Gong-Chan, Lee Joon-Gi as Seo Jung-Woo, and Park Si-Yeon as Kim Sae-Hyun.



Brief summary: Joo Yoo-Rin is a clever Jill-of-all-trades, but is especially skilled in the art of deception. She meets Seol Gong-Chan in Jeju and takes advantage of his wealth when things turn sour for her and her dad. But Gong-Chan has a kind and trusting nature, so he has no idea what swindle he’s in for! He catches her in the act and makes a deal to set things right: he’ll pay off her debts and pay her handsomely if she will come to Seoul and pretend to be his long-lost cousin in order to appease his dying grandfather.



Behold one of the classic dramas that propelled the Hallyu wave! This one is a must-see for all hard-core k-drama viewers.



I liked this one for its fun story. It really sucks you in! I kept staying up late, wanting to watch the next episode and then the next. It has some cliche ideas, such as the rich-guy-falls-for-poor-girl trope, but the lie theme is interesting (although I would maintain that dishonesty causes 98% of all Korean drama problems, and the other 2% is not talking quickly enough 😂). I kept thinking “I’ve seen this type of theme before...” and then the characters brought up the 20th Century Fox film “Anastasia” while “At the Beginning” by Donna Lewis and Richard Marx played in the background. Although this drama has themes and concepts that we’ve seen before and in later dramas, this drama was certainly unique and popular when it aired for being one of the first to put it all together like tasty bibimbap!



This is a 2005 drama, so we can’t put our production standards too high. A lot of the action sound effects sound too fake, music is sometimes overly melodramatic, and the fashion is pretty dated. But let’s love the drama for what it is! It’s a lovely story about honesty! And where else will we see such a young Lee Dong-Wook and Lee Joon-Gi side by side?



I loved the cute secondary couples, such as Aunt Bae and Jang Il-Do. They were so quirky! I was so happy when they finally made progress! And a baby (sorry, spoilers)! I don’t think I’ve ever seen Ahn Suk-Hwan in such an adventurous style, either. I also felt some pride for Ahn Jin-Gyu and Secretary Yoon Jin-Kyung! Nice and steady, but so cute!

I couldn’t help but wonder how fun it was for the actors to play those mental-image scenes. They looked like fun!


In conclusion, this one is a must-see! 5/5 stars!
