The 2011 Korean drama, starring Song Seung-Heon as Park Hae-Young, Kim Tae-Hee as Lee Seol, Park Ye-Jin as Oh Yoon-Ju, and Ryu Soo-Young as Nam Jung-Woo.

Brief summary: Lee Seol thinks she’s just some normal college student, even if she was adopted as a child. But then Park Hae-Young, a government diplomat and the heir to his grandfather’s company, suddenly comes into her life telling Lee Seol that her father was prince and as his sole progeny, she’s a princess. In a fictional Korea that seeks to restore the country’s monarchy, suddenly becoming and getting treated like royalty is certainly something to get used to.

This drama has a similar theme to that of Goong (2006) and The Princess Diaries. There’s a lot of hypothetical “What if Korea was still a monarchy?” While it’s a fun theme that opens up for a lot of possibilities, the drama stayed in the pitiful shadow of Goong’s success. A lot of emphasis was placed on government and politics instead of the character relations, and thus the part of the story we were actually looking forward to (Park Hae-Young + Lee Seol) could be considered dry. Although the cast was certainly skilled enough, something was off. Whether it be the chemistry, the plot, character defects, or perchance the cast was having a bad day and just not acting up to par, we can leave it all by saying it just could have been better.

We can acknowledge the effort that went into producing My Princess, and altogether it’s still a cute story, but it could have been improved. 3/5 stars!
